After More Than a Decade of Daily Migraines, She Finally Had a Migraine-Free Day

by Sandra Burkhart

A 64-year-old woman’s early results after her first 10-day round of Scrambler Therapy

Some cases are straightforward. Others require patience, careful technique, and a willingness to look beyond the traditional 10-day protocol. This was one of those cases.

A 64-year-old woman came to us after living with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) in both feet for more than 15 years. She was also experiencing severe migraines every day and relying heavily on migraine medication just to get through them. Her main goal was migraine relief.

From the beginning, we knew this would likely be a longer process. When the nervous system has been sending persistent pain signals for well over a decade and there are multiple pain patterns involved, it may take more than one round of therapy to make meaningful progress. Our first goal was not to promise a quick fix. It was to see how her nervous system responded.

Her first migraine-free day in more than a decade

After only two days of Scrambler Therapy, she experienced something remarkable: her first full day without a migraine in more than 10 years.

She had a mild migraine on day three, followed by three more migraine-free days. Stress appeared to trigger another migraine around day seven, but she reported that even when the migraines returned, they were not as intense as they had been before beginning therapy.

By the end of the first 10 sessions, she reported that she had been able to reduce how often she relied on her migraine medication. Any medication changes should always be discussed with the prescribing healthcare professional, but for someone who had felt dependent on medication every day, this change felt significant.

“I had forgotten what it felt like to go an entire day without a migraine. After more than 10 years of having one every day, that first migraine-free day gave me hope. My headaches have been less intense, I have needed less medication, and I can feel more in my feet with less pain.”

Her feet improved, too

The changes were not limited to her migraines. After 10 sessions, she estimated approximately a 70% improvement in the sensation in her feet along with a reduction in her CRPS-related pain symptoms.

After more than 15 years of CRPS affecting both feet, that is an encouraging response, especially after only the first round. She is not finished, and we are not presenting her progress as a cure. But the changes she reported give us a strong reason to continue.

Why 10 days is not always the finish line

Ten consecutive sessions are often discussed as a standard starting protocol for Scrambler Therapy, but complex and long-standing cases do not always fit neatly into a standard timeline. Some people respond quickly. Others need additional sessions, a second round, or occasional booster sessions based on how their symptoms change over time. Read more about the 10 day protocol here.

She is now taking a planned break before returning for another round. A break can give us time to observe whether her improvements continue, hold steady, or begin to fade. If progress plateaus or pain begins to increase again without settling, that can help guide the timing of additional sessions or boosters. Our goal in the next round will be to build on the gains she has already made and continue working with the nervous system’s pain signaling, not chase a predetermined number of sessions.

A very encouraging beginning

This client came to us with two severe, long-standing pain problems. We expected a difficult case and knew that 10 days might only be the beginning. Even so, her first round brought her multiple migraine-free days, milder migraines when they did occur, less reliance on medication, and a reported 70% improvement in the sensation and pain symptoms in her feet due to her CRPS.

We are incredibly pleased with her progress so far and, more importantly, she now has something she did not have before beginning her sessions: real hope that her symptoms can change. If you have been living with chronic nerve pain and have been told there are no other options, we would be happy to talk with you about whether Scrambler Therapy may be appropriate for your situation. Every person responds differently, and an individual consultation is the best place to begin.
