Can Red Light Therapy Help You Sleep Better?

Can Red Light Therapy before bed help you sleep better? CNN released an interesting article on this topic and the verdict from CNN...inconclusive! In a nutshell, you will find studies supporting both positions on this topic. To read the full article, click here.

Now let's talk about why that is. One of the things we have learned about Light Therapy is that everyone reacts to it differently. But what we have also learned is that certain wavelengths have certain properties that produce certain effects. I know, lots of "certain" in there.

And we know that exposure to short wavelength blue light suppresses melatonin, causing alertness, while light at the longer wavelengths where visual sensitivity peaks does not. These blue wavelengths are abundant in daylight, and their suppression of melatonin causes a reset of the circadian rhythm that governs sleep and wakefulness. Therefore, it could be argued that exposure to red light in the evening prior to sleep, minimizes the disruption of the circadian system, because disruption of the circadian system occurs with bright or blue light. So it makes sense that red light therapy before bed has the potential to improve sleep! For this reason, I recommend trying red light therapy to assist with sleep. For me personally and for many of my clients, it has improved our sleep and provided so many other benefits as well! And hey, worst case scenario you may reduce some wrinkles, reduce a bit of pain and inflammation…so what have you go to lose!
