How Much Red Light Therapy Do You Actually Need?
Red light therapy has exploded in popularity over the past few years. With so many devices on the market and so much information online, many people walk into my office saying the same things:
“I think I need the strongest panel.”
“Should I be using it every day?”
“Am I supposed to do 30 minutes or an hour?”
These are completely reasonable questions. The challenge is that most of the information circulating online focuses on devices rather than protocols.
The truth is that red light therapy is much less about having the biggest or most powerful device, and much more about how you use the light. Understanding timing, placement, wavelength, and frequency can make the difference between a treatment that feels mildly helpful and one that produces noticeable improvements.
Let’s break down a few things that often surprise people.
Red Light Therapy Is Not “More Is Better”
When people first discover red light therapy, they often assume that longer sessions or stronger lights will automatically lead to better results. It’s an understandable assumption—but biologically, that’s not how light therapy works.
Red and near-infrared light interact with cells through a process called Photobiomodulation. Certain wavelengths of light are absorbed by components inside our cells, particularly within the mitochondria. When this happens, it can stimulate cellular energy production, improve circulation, and influence inflammatory signaling.
However, this process follows what researchers call a biphasic dose response. In simple terms, that means:
- Too little light may not stimulate much of a response.
- The right amount can support beneficial cellular activity.
- Too much light can actually reduce the effect.
This is why most effective red light therapy sessions fall in a relatively modest window. For many applications, 10–20 minutes per treatment area is enough to stimulate the biological processes we’re aiming for. However, factors such as distance, pulsing light, and output can all impact session timing which is why it’s important to understand how the various devices on the market work.
Longer sessions don’t necessarily produce stronger benefits. In fact, excessive exposure can sometimes decrease the response your cells have to the light.
Understanding that balance is one of the key reasons protocols matter.
Consistency Matters More Than Intensity
Another common misconception is that occasional long sessions will produce the same results as shorter, consistent treatments.
But our bodies respond best to regular signals rather than occasional intense ones.
Think of red light therapy more like exercise than medication. A single two-hour workout every few weeks isn’t nearly as effective as shorter sessions performed consistently over time. The same idea applies here.
When light therapy is used consistently, it can gradually support:
- Improved circulation
- Reduced inflammatory signaling
- Enhanced cellular energy production
- Tissue repair processes
- Nervous system balance
- Improved mood
These changes tend to happen gradually as the body adapts to repeated stimulation.
That’s why most protocols recommend multiple sessions per week rather than occasional long exposures.
Wavelength and Placement Matter More Than Device Size
One of the most overlooked aspects of red light therapy is that not all light is doing the same thing inside the body.
Different wavelengths interact with tissue at different depths and may influence different biological systems.
For example:
Red wavelengths (most commonly 630 nm and 660 nm) tend to interact more with surface tissues and are often used for applications involving the skin and superficial tissue.
Near-infrared wavelengths (typically around 810–880 nm) penetrate deeper and may interact more with muscles, joints, and deeper tissues.
Placement matters just as much. The distance from the device, the angle of exposure, and the area being treated can significantly influence how much light energy actually reaches the target tissue.
Two people could use the exact same device and experience completely different results simply because their positioning, timing, or goals are different.
This is one of the main reasons many people benefit from a little guidance when starting.
Why Personalized Protocols Make a Difference
Someone dealing with joint pain might benefit from a deeper-penetrating wavelength placed close to the target area. Someone focusing on skin health might use a different wavelength, distance, and timing altogether. However, someone with a skin condition may need a more conservative approach.
Other factors can also influence a protocol, such as:
- Current health conditions
- Sensitivity to stimulation
- Activity level
- Stress and nervous system state
- Devices already available at home
- Currently therapies already being used
Without a plan, people often end up experimenting randomly, which can lead to inconsistent results.
With a clear protocol, however, light therapy becomes much more predictable and effective.
Bringing Personalized Light Therapy to Ventura County
When I started my company years ago, many laughed at me, asked me what sort of voodoo science I was selling! I could not be happier to see that red light therapy is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a powerful, non-invasive therapy with a wide range of health benefits.
As red light therapy has become more popular, many people in Ventura County have started purchasing devices or exploring wellness technologies on their own. The challenge is that very few places understand what they are selling or provide guidance on how to actually use these tools effectively.
That’s one of the reasons I created the Red Light Room Experience in my office! As a Certified Light Therapist and chronic pain sufferer, my focus isn’t just providing access to high quality equipment. My goal is to help people understand how to use these technologies strategically so they can get meaningful results like I have.
There is no one else offering this level of personalized light therapy consultation and protocol development and we are now open right here in Camarillo, California at Hive Med Spa!
During our session, I will work one-on-one with you to:
- Understand their goals and current challenges
- Demonstrate different red light therapy devices
- Create customized treatment protocols
- Explore ways to combine technologies such as light therapy, PEMF, or vibration training
- Develop routines that can be continued both in the clinic and at home
For many people, having a clear plan removes the uncertainty and helps them use these tools much more effectively.
What Happens During a One-on-One Session
A personalized session is designed to take the guesswork out of the process.
During our time together, we can explore:
- Your goals, symptoms, and current wellness routine
- The science behind light therapy
- How different wavelengths and placements work
- Hands-on demonstrations with different devices
- Custom protocols tailored specifically to your needs
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how to use light therapy intentionally, rather than relying on trial and error. And if you are ready to purchase a device, I will have devices on hand and available to take home!
