Inside My Calmare Scrambler Therapy Training Experience

by Sandra Burkhart

This past week I have spent immersed in training focused on Calmare Scrambler Therapy, one of the most innovative non-invasive technologies available for chronic neuropathic nerve issues. These trainings are not casual seminars or lectures. They are hands-on, detailed, and highly focused. We worked on 10 difference cases and every day was spent refining electrode placement, understanding pain and symptom signaling patterns, and learning how to interpret the body’s responses during treatment.

The goal is simple but incredibly important: improve outcomes for who those living with chronic neuropathic nerve pain issues. And nerve “pain” can take many forms. It may mean numbness in the feet, no feeling at all, sharp, shooting pain, zaps, burning, stinging, or somewhere in between. It is debilitating and often times there are few effective options.

For many people, nerve issues have become a daily reality after injuries, surgeries, chemotherapy, CRPS, or long-standing nerve damage. Traditional treatments often focus on managing symptoms rather than addressing the underlying communication problem in the nervous system. Calmare Scrambler Therapy takes a very different approach.

A Different Way to Think About Pain

Calmare Scrambler Therapy works by delivering carefully designed electrical signals through the skin that communicate with the nervous system. Instead of sending pain signals to the brain, the therapy sends synthetic “non-pain” information through the same nerve pathways. Over a series of sessions, the nervous system can begin to reinterpret those signals and reduce the chronic pain response.

It is a fascinating example of how adaptable the nervous system really is. Calmare Scrambler Therapy produces a synthetic signal closely mimicking the body’s own normal nerve signals—essentially a "pseudo-endogenous" non-pain message—to trick the brain. Rather than simply blocking pain like traditional TENS units, Calmare Scrambler Therapy uses 16 different, dynamic, and variable-geometry action potentials that are synthesized to mimic natural non-pain information.

Why Calmare Scrambler Therapy is Technique-Dependent

One thing that is often misunderstood is that Calmare Scrambler Therapy is highly technique-dependent. The device itself is only one part of the equation. The real effectiveness of treatment comes from the practitioner’s ability to interpret pain patterns, place electrodes strategically around the affected nerves, and adjust the treatment dynamically from session to session.

There is both science and artistry involved. Small changes in electrode placement can dramatically change how the nervous system receives the signal. Practitioners also have to communicate closely with you during treatment — helping you understand what sensations you should be feeling, recognizing when the signal is correct, and making real-time adjustments to guide the nervous system toward a non-pain response.

In other words, the therapy isn’t simply “turning on a machine.” It requires careful observation, experience, and a deep understanding of how neuropathic pain behaves in the body. The sequence of treatment, the way sessions are progressed over multiple days, and the ability to read your response all influence the final outcome.

That is why training and hands-on education are so important. Ongoing training with experienced physicians and practitioners allows techniques to be refined, subtle patterns to be recognized more quickly, and treatment strategies to continually improve. It’s also one of the reasons I make it a priority to invest in specialized training events like this—so I can bring the most current techniques and insights back to my practice!

Watching the Nervous System Respond in Real Time

One of the most remarkable parts of these trainings is seeing how quickly the nervous system can respond when the signals are delivered correctly. I witnessed multiple cases dealing with numbness in the feet for years experience noticeable improvements during the therapy sessions. With each session, sensation has been restored! Watching those moments never stops being meaningful. It reinforces why I continue to pursue training and collaboration with experienced physicians and practitioners in this field.

Why This Matters for Our Community

Chronic nerve pain is incredibly complex and often leaves people feeling like they have run out of options. Many are told their only choices are medications, injections, or invasive procedures. Calmare Scrambler Therapy offers another path worth exploring — a non-invasive approach designed to help retrain the nervous system rather than simply mask pain signals. Bringing this technology to our community means people have access to an option that many have never even heard about.

Continuing the Journey

For me, this work is deeply personal. As someone who lives with a chronic nerve pain condition, I understand how exhausting the search for answers can be. That experience drives my commitment to learning everything I can about innovative approaches that may help people reclaim their quality of life.

This recent training was another step in that journey, and I’m excited to bring what I learned back to the practice and continue helping people explore new possibilities for relief.
