Light Therapy as a Solution for Treating Migraines and Headaches
Can red light therapy help reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines? Yes it can! In fact, targeted light therapy can be an extremely effective way to treat migraines and headaches. Over the years, there a has been growing body of clinical research supporting the effectiveness of green light specifically at minimizing both the frequency and intensity of migraines! As a chronic migraine sufferer myself, I was curious to learn more because I have never found prescription medication to work. Usually I am stuck with Excedrin Migraine and a quiet, dark room to wait it out. Well the good news is...there is another option! So let's chat more about targeted red light therapy and green light therapy as potential options for treating migraines and headaches!
Targeted light therapy devices are designed to deliver light to specific, localized areas of the body. These include handheld torches, lasers, bands, and other handheld devices. These devices can be used alone or in conjunction with Photopuncture points to target specific areas of concern. This targeted application of light to energy points (acupoints) can elicit a fast, systemic response from the body. A focused beam is used to specifically activate energy points along the acupuncture meridians to stimulate a systemic reaction in the body

As mentioned earlier, green light has taken the spotlight for it's potential to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines. A study published by Cephalalgia in 2020 reviewed 7 participants who experience episodic migraines and 22 who experience chronic migraines. The study reviewed the use of both white light and Green Light over a 10 week period and found that the green light was more effective at reducing the number of headache days per month, reduced intensity and frequency of the headaches and other quality of life measures including the ability to fall and stay asleep and the ability to perform work.
Another recent study published in the Journal of the International Association for the Study of Pain found that green light has the ability to block pain. When rats were fitted with green contact lenses, they experienced long-lasting effects on their antinociception (the ability to block pain) when exposed to room LED (light-emitting diodes) light and a thermal pain stimulus. This antinociceptive effect lasted for 4 days following the exposure and showed no side effects or impairment to motor function. Rats wearing opaque contact lenses were unable to exhibit this antinociception.
More research is needed to fully understand the effectiveness of light therapy for treating migraines, but this is promising as someone who has suffered with migraines my entire life. I personally have noticed less migraines since using red light therapy. I also find the torch combined with Photopuncture points can be effective if I catch it early!
