To Pulse or Not to Pulse, That is the Question!

by Sandra Burkhart

Let's Talk About Pulse Rate!

The market is being flooded by devices and we are seeing more and devices coming out with pulsing technology. What does that mean exactly? Pulsing the light means turning the light wave (color) off and on for a specific number of times per second.
One analogy you can think of is turning a light switch and off over a given time period. Therefore the Pulse Rate equals number of times the light pulses on and off in a unit of time. The number of times the light is turned off and on per second is measured in Hertz (Hz) and is also called frequency or the pulse rate. So when you see "10 Hz" in a specification for a product, that means it is pulsing 10 times per second.
There is a great deal of research coming out regarding the improved benefits of pulsed light on the body. Research by Javad T. Hashmi, MD indicates that a brief, "Quench Period" (Pulse OFF times) can make light therapy more effective as it allows muscles to cool off and penetrate deep tissues which achieve greater treatment depths.
To get a better understanding of why pulsed Light Therapy is effective, think about your body when you exercise. If you do multiple workouts in a day and don't allow adequate time to rest and recover, your body will be prone to injury. This is because you are not allowing your body and cells the time they need to recover and regenerate. The same synergies apply to pulsed Light Therapy: the short "Quench Period" between wavelengths allows for your cells and tissues the time they need to digest, adapt and respond better.
