Using Energy Output and Distance to Calculate Your Dosage
Have you seen one of these before? Do you now what it means? The image below is illustrating the power output at a particular distance for the Light Therapy Resource tabletop panel. The reason this matters is because it will help you determine how much time to spend under the light, aka your proper dosage. If you are considering purchasing a panel and this information is not clearly provided in the marketing materials, turn around and walk away!!
The image below is showing you how much energy output the panel is providing at a given distance. So in this case, at 6 inches away, you will be receive 136 mW (megawatts) per cm2 per second. However, energy is measured in Joules which is a unit of energy with both an output and time component. Ok, so bare with me are we take this a few steps further.
There are .001 Joules in a megawatt. 30 Joules is a standard dose. So from the image below, at 6 inches away, 136 mW/cm2 x .001J = .136cm2/sec
30 J/cm2 / .136 cm2/sec = 220.59 seconds
220.59 seconds / 60 seconds = 3.68 minutes
So you will adjust according to your distance from the panel and the irradiance measurement shown below. Does that make sense? Feel free to ask me if this doesn’t make sense!
