Why I'm Seeing So Many People Regain Feeling in Their Hands and Feet

by Sandra Burkhart

When I first became Calmare certified in Scrambler Therapy, I expected to help people living with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and other chronic nerve pain illnesses like I have. I had experienced firsthand how powerful this technology could be and I was excited to bring it to others with similar illnesses and diseases.

What I didn't expect was how many people I would be able to help who suffer from peripheral neuropathy in either their feet or hands. More and more, at the end of a scrambler therapy session, my client would look down at their hands or feet and say things like:

"I can actually feel my toes again."

"My feet don't feel asleep anymore."

"I forgot what it felt like to walk without burning."

At first, I thought these were isolated experiences. Then it happened again. And again.

After working with more and more clients experiencing peripheral neuropathy symptoms, I realized I wasn't seeing a coincidence, I was seeing a pattern. Whether someone's symptoms were associated with chemotherapy, CRPS, sciatica, spinal conditions, nerve compression, or another nerve-related condition, many were describing similar improvements in sensation, comfort, and function over the course of their Scrambler Therapy sessions.

As someone who has now dedicated my career to helping people explore non-invasive options, those moments have become some of the most rewarding parts of what I do. If you're unfamiliar with Scrambler Therapy or would like to learn more about how it works, be sure to read our companion article, "Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: How Calmare Scrambler Therapy and Red Light Therapy Can Help!" here, where I explain the technology and the science behind it in greater detail.

It's Not Just About Pain

When people hear the word neuropathy, they often think of pain. But for many of the people who visit our office, the numbness is just as life-changing.

Burning, tingling, pins and needles, reduced sensation, or feeling like you're walking on hot coals can make every step uncomfortable. Others describe feeling like they're wearing thick socks all the time or that their feet simply don't belong to them anymore.

When you can't properly feel your feet, your balance can change. Walking becomes less confident. Stairs become more intimidating. Even standing for long periods can feel different because your brain isn't receiving normal sensory information.

That's why one of my favorite moments is hearing someone say,

"I can finally feel the floor beneath my feet."

Those moments never get old. And it inspired me to write this blog because I want the world to know there is an option to regain feeling and function after a peripheral neuropathy diagnosis, no matter how long it has been going on for.

Three Stories I'll Never Forget

Every person's experience is unique, and no two situations are exactly alike. While individual results vary, these are three stories that have stayed with me because they illustrate the kinds of changes I've had the privilege of witnessing.

Forty-Five Years of CRPS

One woman in her seventies had been living with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) since 1980. It began in her right foot before eventually spreading into her left. Over the years, much of the normal sensation in her feet had been replaced by numbness, burning, and constant pins-and-needles.

Within just a few days of beginning Scrambler Therapy, she started noticing changes. By the end of twelve consecutive sessions, she reported that the burning had resolved and that normal sensation had returned to both feet. After living with those symptoms for more than four decades, it was an incredible moment to witness.

Three Years of Burning Feet

Another woman in her eighties came to us because walking had become miserable. For nearly nine years, her feet had felt as though they were on fire whenever she walked. She also had a long history of sciatica and recently burning sensations extending into her calves.

After only two sessions, she reported that her back discomfort had dropped to zero. By the completion of ten consecutive sessions, she described having normal feeling and function back in both feet. Watching her confidence return as she walked was something I'll always remember.

Sciatica Affecting Both Feet

A woman in her fifties came to our office experiencing severe burning pain in both of her feet, believed to be associated with sciatica. She had been suffering for a few years and it was continuing to get worse. By the end of thirteen consecutive Scrambler Therapy sessions, she reported that her pain had resolved and she has continued to do well for nine months now.

Stories like these remind me why I love what I do.

Why Am I Seeing This Pattern?

One of the fascinating things about Scrambler Therapy is that it was designed to help change how the nervous system processes pain information. While everyone's nervous system is different, many people also begin describing changes in sensation as those pain signals become quieter.

Over time, I've noticed that people aren't just talking about pain levels.

  • They're talking about everyday life.
  • They're walking with more confidence.
  • They're sleeping better.
  • They're standing longer.
  • They're moving more naturally.
  • They're noticing the texture of carpet beneath their feet again.
  • They're feeling their toes.

As a practitioner, those are some of the most meaningful conversations I have.

Peripheral Neuropathy Can Have Many Different Causes

Peripheral neuropathy isn't one single condition. It's a collection of symptoms that can develop for many different reasons. People who come to our office have experienced neuropathy symptoms associated with:

  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN)
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal conditions
  • Nerve compression
  • Previous injuries
  • Other chronic nerve-related conditions

Although the underlying causes may differ, one thing I've consistently observed is that many people describe improvements in burning, numbness, tingling, sensation, and everyday function during their series of Scrambler Therapy sessions.

Every Person Is Different

No therapy works the same for everyone. How someone responds depends on many factors, including their overall health, the underlying condition, how long symptoms have been present, and many other individual variables. Because of that, I never promise specific results.

What I can say is that since expanding our services at Light Therapy Resource to offer Scrambler Therapy, peripheral neuropathy affecting the hands and feet has become one of the most common reasons people seek out Scrambler Therapy, and the improvements I've witnessed continue to surprise me. Every time someone looks down and says, "I haven't felt my feet like this in years," I'm reminded why I chose this path.
